Superboy & the Legion of Super-Heroes #242
Published and © by DC, August 1978

Title: “Startarget Earth”
Synopsis: The Legion sees sinister machinations unfolding – but who is to blame? The Khunds? Their own allies? Or someone else entirely?

Writer: Paul Levitz
Penciler: James Sherman
Inker: Bob McLeod

Review: After a choppy start (see review of LoSH #241), Paul Levitz’s “Earthwar” saga quickly settles into a grove. The characterization is stronger this outing while the plotting reveals hints at the game within the game. The art – by the fantastic team of James Sherman and Bob McLeod – continues to impress.

Title: “Girls’ Night Out”
Synopsis: Several female Legionnaires find their night out for dinner interrupted by a high-end robbery scheme.

Writer (plot): Paul Levitz
Writer: Paul Kupperberg
Penciler: Arvell Jones
Inker: Danny Bulanadi

Review: For a second time, a strong “Earthwar” chapter is undermined by a backup featuring a slight story and fanzine-level art.

Grade (for the entire issue): B

Second opinion: “I’m enjoying the story and would recommend that comics fans pay attention to what’s happening in this comic.” – Paul Emrath, AFTA #2, August 1978 … “The art on the lead story is exceptionally good and it would be a visually excellent book if the backup was as well done. … 3 out of 5 stars.” – Mike Conroy, Comic Media News International #36, June-July 1978 … Recommended by The Slings & Arrows Comic Guide (second edition), 2003.

Cool factor: That cover is a great example of how amazing the art is throughout.
Not-so-cool factor: The backup feature’s art? Not so much.

Notable: Includes a text feature titled “Magic and the Legion (Part 2): We’re Off to See the Wizard,” documenting role of magic in the 30th century.

Character quotable: “There is news from home – Earth is under attack – war has already broken out!” – Ambassador Relnic of the United Planets
