The Brave & the Bold #131
Published and © by DC, December 1976
Title: “Take 7 Steps to … Wipe-Out!”
Synopsis: Batman and Wonder Woman team to foil a plot by Catwoman and the North African nation of Sudaria.
Writer: Bob Haney
Artist: Jim Aparo
Review: Bob Haney’s work on Brave & the Bold is always a bit hit or miss, and this isn’t one of his stronger outings. A weak spy thriller, the story teams Batman and Wonder Woman in a convoluted plot involving Catwoman and a fictional stand-in for then-oft-in-the-news Libya. The characterization is largely interchangeable and the plot lurches to and fro with little realism or attention to story logic. On the upside, Haney’s wackadoodle scripts always provide master Bat-artist Jim Aparo with plenty of cool things to draw. From jungle cats to DC’s favorite Amazon, Aparo turns in a fine job as usual.
Grade: B-
Cool factor: Catwoman is rocking her Silver Age costume.
Not-so-cool factor: Catwoman’s murderous ways seem quite out of character.
Collector’s note: According to MyComicShop.com, there is a Mark Jewelers variant of this issue.
Character quotable: “Fellow members, the United States is a paper tiger whose claws Sudaria soon shall pull!” – Catwoman, a U.N. diplomat who knows a thing or two about cats
