Title: “Siege!”
Synopsis: When Sarah Simms is taken hostage by a former co-worker, Cyborg and company attempt to resolve the situation without bloodshed.

Writer: Marv Wolfman
Artist (layouts): Keith Pollard
Embellisher: Romeo Tanghal

Review: George Pérez is such an integral part of the New Teen Titans experience that it’s a shock when he’s not the penciler. But guest layout artist Keith Pollard delivers a respectable approximation and inker Romeo Tanghal does a good job keeping this issue consistent with the book’s standard aesthetic. On the story side, Marv Wolfman tackles another contemporary social issue, swapping out runaways (see reviews of New Teen Titans #26 and #27) for domestic violence. The topic is generally well handled, but there are a couple of scenes that undermine the suspension of disbelief. Overall, a solid issue sans Pérez.

Grade: B

Cool factor: That’s a dramatic Pérez cover.
Not-so-cool factor: One crazy guy with a gun can get the best of both Cyborg and Changeling? Really? And Cyborg can cut a hole through the ceiling of a room filled with people without a single person noticing? Hmmm.

Collector’s note: According to the Grand Comics Database, there is a 75¢ Canadian variant of this issue. … According to MyComicShop.com, there is also a Mark Jewelers variant.

Character quotable: “Oh lord, honey – why did you make me do this?” – Mark Wright, delusional toxic male
