Fellow green Barsoomian Barak Sol challenges Tars Tarkas in formal combat for leadership of the Thark. Chris Claremont’s script is tough on new readers, but the visual storytelling of a young Frank Miller – inked by Bob McLeod – is already a treat.

After an extended absence, Warlord finally makes his way back to Tara – only to find Shamballah under siege from within! Mike Grell’s story is a bit overstuffed but the art – inked by Joe Rubinstein – is quite nice.

In the lead story, Batman and Ragman team to stop a criminal organization that preys on the poor. Writer David V. Reed delivers a nice, tight tale, but Michael Golden’s artwork steals the show.

The X-Men clash with Sauron in the Savage Land, then team with Ka-Zar to battle Garokk, the Petrified Man. There are a couple of missteps this time out, but, overall, it’s another excellent issue from the team of Chris Claremont, John Byrne and Terry Austin.

Spider-Man and Power Man team to stop a gang that is terrorizing New York with an arson-fueled protection racket. The story falls short of poignant, but the art pairing of John Byrne and Al Gordon is quite excellent.
